Upon completion, Vision House Jacob’s Well in Shoreline will provide a home and support services for 20 homeless families. Modeled after the successful Vision House program in Renton that serves 23 families, Jacob's Well will include a licensed child care center as well as a crisis center and program space. Since we construct our facilities debt-free, we're building on a pay-as-you-go basis and have raised the funding needed to get through painting the 3-story exterior and installing the fire sprinklers. Businesses, churches, individuals and community groups are now raising money for the heating and mechanical and have collected about $25,000 of the $80,000 needed. Hopefully we will be installing that in a few months as the dollars come in. Our goal, if donations continue to come in, is to move homeless families into the complex sometime in 2012.

One Board at a Time

Quite literally... one board at a time! First piece of siding installed today. Glass front doors installed last week. Hope to be moving homeless families in by the middle of 2012. Next step is raising the money for the heating system. Thanks hard-working volunteers and generous donors for getting us this far!

Jacob's Well Complex Making Progress!

Our new complex in Shoreline for homeless moms and kids is coming along! The windows are in and the exterior doors have been installed. We're also getting ready to put up the siding.

Thanks to Scott Fuller, Bob Sime, Ted Almquist and Don Ricker for their hard work on a cold Saturday morning. Someday the pitter patter of children's feet running around the Jacob's Well complex will bless all of your hard work!

Together we WILL get this built for the many homeless mothers and children in our community who need a place to restore their lives! Thanks to so many individuals, churches, businesses and community groups that are partnering with us to make this dream become a reality. We need funding, in-kind donations and volunteers to help us build this complex DEBT-FREE!

There are volunteer opportunities each week, usually on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Email Kristi Slattery (kristis@vision-house.org) to let her know if you'd like to be added to our construction email list to receive updates on how you can lend a hand. You can help out often or just as your schedule allows.

Dessert Fundraiser brings in $75,000!

We’re pleased to report that a total of $75,000 was raised at the Jacob's Well Dessert Fundraiser on Saturday, October 15th! Originally, the total was $61,300, but a generous donor made a $13,700 contribution a couple of days after the event to get us to our next step in the project, which is installing the fire sprinkler system to keep families safe while living at Jacob's Well. Praise God, we're moving forward! Special thanks to Matt Case, radio host with KCMS 105.3 and the Seattle Children's Chorus. See the pictures!

Plumbing and Windows Start Today

We have been amazed and blessed by the outpouring of support on our new expansion project in Shoreline called Jacob’s Well. Nearly 500 volunteers from more than 30 different churches, community groups and businesses have been working tirelessly to frame the new complex. So far, volunteers have contributed over 8,000 service hours in about 8 weeks’ time and served 1,100 meals along with countless cookies, muffins and cups of hot coffee, all to make workers feel appreciated. We estimate that the volunteer effort has saved the project $180,000, which is an incredible gift during economic times like we are in.

Upon completion, Jacob’s Well will have 20 apartments, a counseling center and a child care center. It’s being modeled after the successful Vision House program in Renton, which has been providing transitional housing and support services for over 20 years.

What’s Next?

The roof is nearing completion thanks to Bob Hernaki and Redmond Roofing. Windows and plumbing starts today and next are the doors and siding. Since we are committed to building our facilities debt-free, the next fundraising step is to raise $340,000 to install the heat and lights. Every week of activity on the construction site brings us one step closer to bringing a home to homeless families.

JW Construction Update

We rolled the last truss last Saturday! Work this week will consist of the following:

Friday, May 13th and Saturday, May 14th - Skilled and Professionals will be on the roof bracing the trusses and nailing on the sheathing. 9AM to 5PM. Unskilled laborers are needed to provide the plywood to the guys on the roof. After the trusses are secure unskilled/semi-skilled workers are needed to cut the plates out of the door openings and start pulling the braces. We also have free firewood and what isn't taken needs to go in the dumpster.

And as always, a hearty lunch is provided!

This Saturday will be the last chance for you and your friends to participate in the framing of the Jacob’s Well project! If you have been wanting to hammer some nails but just haven’t had the chance to get on site, come this Saturday, April 30^th from 9AM to 5PM. Lots of snacks, a hearty lunch and drinks will be provided.

Also, CBN will be onsite filming for an upcoming 700 Club segment so put on your smile and make sure your church, community group and/or family are represented! We will finish the third floor framing!! (woohoo!)

Please be sure that you and/or your group are registered online for this last opportunity to frame.

For every muffin munched, every lavish lunch, every cup of coffee chugged and every hand-delivered treat to the volunteers on the Jacob’s Well construction site, we have Marla Whitmer to thank. Marla and her crew of over 50 hospitality volunteers have provided lunch, snacks, drinks and coffee to over 400 volunteers working on a project in Shoreline to bring safe housing and services to homeless single mothers and their children.

Marla’s commitment to the community and her dedicated volunteer service has caught the eye of King 5’s morning show New Day Northwest. She is one of 10 community leaders nominated for their SuperMom contest. She has our vote and we hope she has yours too! If Marla wins, Jacob’s Well receives a $500 contribution in her name and Marla receives a very well deserved day at the spa!

“We could not do this without Marla,” commented Susan Camerer, Vision House Executive Director. “Her support has been critical to keeping the construction volunteers feeling appreciated and coming back. One volunteer commented that this was the only construction site you could actually GAIN weight on!” The first meal Marla provided was on May 15, 2010 and she just hasn’t stopped. She has been a faithful and steadfast supporter, committed to helping homeless kids.

The Vision House Jacob’s Well project made great progress today! We will be working on Sunday, April 3 from 1-5. Tomorrow we only need professional, skilled and semi-skill volunteers who have experience with beams, framing, TJIs and decking on the second floor. We also need someone for first aid and photography.

Jacob’s Well Build kicks off this weekend and it is going to be a beautiful day!

If you are scheduled for Saturday, April 2^nd:

Arrive early & get on a bus before it leaves at 8:15 AM at Northshore Baptist or 8:50 AM at Aldercrest Learning Center (see bus stop locations and instructions attached)
If you know your assignment and have a tee-shirt, proceed to SAFETY table for hard hat, gloves and goggles, if you do not have your own. Look for signage and find your team.
If you do not have an assignment OR don’t have your t-shirt OR you haven’t registered, go to the CHECK-IN tent. You will get your t-shirt and sign a liability waiver. They will give you an assignment. Proceed to SAFETY table for hard hat, gloves and goggles if you do not have your own. Look for signage and find your team.
If you are not on the list at the check-in tent, proceed to the ORIENTATION tent. You will be assigned a team and directed to the SAFETY table for hard hat, gloves and goggles, if you do not have your own. Look for signage and find your team.
Listen for the mega phone. You will be called back for a quick prayer and to help set up the first walls between 9:00 AM and 9:30 AM.

What to bring: hammer, nail pouch or tool belt (limited supply on site) Please clearly mark your tools. If you have favorite gloves goggles or hard hats, bring them.

Make sure to eat a hearty breakfast as lunch will not be provided until after 12:00pm.

Don’t forget your t-shirt, you are required to wear it at all times.

I-405 is CLOSED in Bellevue April 2 and 3rd. Take alternative routes.

Dinner Meeting March 24th

The meeting on Thursday, March 24th from 6:00 to 8:00 PM will be critical so we can hit the ground running on April 2! It will be held at Schirmer Auditorium on the CRISTA Campus. >>Directions

Everyone will be assigned their team leaders and shown exactly what piece of the project they will be working on.
We will assess skill levels and assign colored t-shirts accordingly.
Since there will be youth groups involved in the project we will go over safety protocol in a little more detail.
We will collect the signed waivers so we can minimize the amount of paper work on April 2.
We will cover transportation and parking.

Eight different churches were represented today at our first gathering for the volunteer framers. We are working at training the leads to coordinate teams of 10-15 volunteers for the April 2 Framing Kick Off. Next meeting scheduled for March 12th, 10:00 AM at NorthShore Baptist Church. Vision House kicks off our compressed build for the Jacob's Well project in Shoreline on Saturday, April 2^nd REGISTER HERE TODAY

On Saturdays (possibly Sundays) through out the month of April all levels of volunteers are needed along side the construction crews from people to man the registration table, safety officers, floaters to keep the site clean, knowledgeable runners to keep the framers supplied with the right tools and materials, videographers/ photographers, someone to manage the tool crib, and a hospitality crew to make sure volunteers are fed and appreciated.

March 24^th, MANDATORY Pre-Construction Dinner Meeting, 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM

MANDATORY meeting for all construction labor volunteers. Dinner, dessert, and refreshments will be provided. We will talk about safety, get a good look at the plans and start breaking into work groups. (Support positions not required to attend. Only direct construction volunteers) Must be registered for work days prior to attending the pre-construction meeting.

Also watch for a Topping Out Party and Prayer Meeting on a Sunday after framing and before drywall to pray and write scriptures on walls.

Get your hammers ready! Vision House kicks off our compressed build for the Jacob's Well project in Shoreline this April. We are currently recruiting 15 volunteer professional framers and 15 skilled assistants, willing to patiently lead volunteer crews of 10-15 skilled and unskilled laborers on Saturdays and possibly Sundays during the month of April. The build has been divided into 15 segments and each Team Lead and their skilled assistant will be responsible for one segment. (see below)

Team Leads will be responsible for one of the following areas:

Cut team- precut all studs, trimmers, headers and blocking- need cut list
Stairs- landing and stairs
Wall material layout- Spread lumber in preparation for nailing
Wall nailing- Check and nail all lumber in walls in preparation for sheeting
Sheeting- square wall, sheet, tack and snap nailing lines and openings
Sheeting nailing- nail sheeting, cut openings (shear wall strapping)
Wall standing- Stands, plumb, line and secure
Floor layout- Mark plates for all beams, joists, including hangers
Floor cutters- cut beams, joists, blocks
Beams- set all beams (most in first floor)
Joists framing-
Hardware installation- hold downs, hangers
Exterior deck- posts, joists
Exterior staircases- walls, landings stairs
Subfloor installation

April 2^nd is our first compressed build framing day! We are preparing for our compressed framing build and are in the process of identifying 15 lead volunteers who are skilled, professional framers that can lead a crew of 10 volunteers. The teams are broken up in the following groups. Team Leads must be professional, patient and willing to lead a group of skill and un-skilled volunteers.

A lot is happening on the Jacob’s Well project.

We have been amazed that during the fourth quarter community members, churches and businesses through a series of events, concerts, a sleep-out, designated offerings, individual contributions and a couple grants raised a generous $199,840! Dollars raised are designated to the purchase of the materials and building supplies needed for the project! With our pay-as-we-go building model, this amount takes us just about through the purchase of the roofing materials.
We have raised the money needed to install the waterlines, sewers, pay for the lumber needed for framing, windows and about ½ of the roofing material. We are blown away by that support! We are now raising money to purchase the other half of the roofing material and to purchase the exterior doors.
We are finalizing the water line bids and installation should begin within the next few weeks.

Once the water line and fire hydrant are installed, we will start volunteer crews framing the structure. TENTATIVELY we are looking at an April 1^st kick-off and will need all levels of expertise on site from professional, skilled and unskilled framers, people to man the registration table, safety officers, floaters to keep the site clean, knowledgeable runners to keep the framers supplied with the right tools and materials, videographers/photographers, someone to manage the tool crib, and a whole hospitality crew to make sure volunteers are feed and appreciated.

Braving the freezing weather, snow and icy conditions the Seattle Seahawks generously showed up today with 23 Thanksgiving Day feasts along with blankets for the Vision House families at our Renton location! Vision House staff member, Mary Burton, commented, “When I delivered the baskets to some of the families, they were so surprised and grateful. They weren’t expecting anything, so it was fun to see the smiles on their faces.” Thanks Hawks! We appreciate you! NOW BEAT THE CHIEFS!!!

Lumber Framing Package Secured!

Jacob's Well Dessert Event Raises over $63,800!

Approximately 160 people raised $63,837 at the Jacob's Well Dessert Event! When added to other fundraising proceeds, a total of $101,000 has been raised towards the $160,000 needed to purchase the lumber to build phase 1 of Vision House Jacob's Well. This beautiful housing complex in Shoreline will provide housing and support services for homeless mothers and children.

Thanks to everyone who helped make the Women Helping Women - Shoreline Sleep-Out such a huge success! Our total to date (and money is STILL coming in!) is: $17,616!!! (This includes the matching gifts). Our goal was to match the original pledge of $4,000. We did that, and when the second matching gift was pledged. the group assumed that would simply be an add-on. However, the reality is that we matched, dollar for dollar, both matching gifts, and then some! The dollars raised will go to help purchase the lumber needed to start the framing on the Jacob’s Well project and bring more housing and support services to homeless moms and kids. We hope to start framing right after the waterline is installed (permits in process) and the weather permits.

Vision House Jacob's Well Receives $266,000 Grant

The HEDCO Foundation recently provided the Vision House Jacob's Well project in Shoreline, Washington with a $266,000 contribution. The Foundation asked that dollars be earmarked to the development of the sewers, waterline extension and storm drainage. This is great news since the lack of an on-site fire hydrant and waterline has delayed the framing portion of the project.

In exchange for the generous contribution, the Jacob's Well group is honored to acknowledge the gift by naming the on-site community and service center after the foundation. "We are very excited about this generous grant! As you can imagine, asking contributors to help install sewers and other infrastructure improvements is a tough sell!" joked Susan Camerer, Vision House Executive Director. "We are thrilled to be moving forward and now our next big push will be to raise the funds needed to purchase the lumber to begin framing the building."

Women and friends of Shoreline Covenant Church are turning tents into homes for women and children in Shoreline by raising money to buy lumber for Jacob's Well-a transitional housing complex, being constructed by Vision-House, for homeless women and children. Contact the church to bring your tent and pledges from friends, neighbors, family and co-workers and spend one night in solidarity with our sisters who struggle every night to find a safe and dry and warm place to sleep with their kids. We will end on Saturday morning with breakfast served at 8am!

We will "sleep-out" in our tents in the church parking lot and raise at least $4,000 in pledges. We have a donor willing to match that dollar for dollar, so if forty women participate and each raise $100 (that's only ten people giving $10 or twenty-five people each "buying" one $4 board), we can turn $4,000 into $8,000 and make a serious dent in the $160,000 Vision House needs to frame Jacob's Well before winter. http://www.vision-house.org/vh_north.htm
